Put your best sock forward

People of the Sock is a community project initiated by writer and Craft Vic pal Narelle Hanratty in association with Morris & Sons. By bringing together experienced and novice sock knitters in a sock knitting workshop, the results will be distributed to Big Issue vendors as Christmas presents.

According to Narelle, she was was inspired to start the project after meeting a spry and youthful 80-year-old woman knitting socks outside a hospital while her husband was parking the car.

"The woman was knitting socks for a Sydney organisation that distributes them to people who are homeless. Socks are particularly valued, she said, because they’re warm and easily portable. And when not wearing the socks, a person who is homeless can stuff them in their pocket for the day, unlike the gift of a blanket which the person has to carry around for the day or hide somewhere."

It's an excellent cause and if you're interested in participating (whether it is as a teacher or workshop participant, or if you'd like to donate materials etc!), then make sure you attend the People of the Sock planning meeting at Morris & Sons (Level 1, 234 Collins Street, Melbourne) on Wed 3 Nov at 5pm - that's the day after tomorrow!

Last Saturday was a momentous day for Craft Hatch as our market almost tripled in size to see 25 makers taking over Experimedia at the State Library of Victoria. The day started out quite wet and gloomy (lucky we were indoors), but it soon brightened up. Yay!

Thanks to all of our lovely stallholders and to everyone who came... the next market will be back at the City Library on Flinders Lane and will be happening on Sat 13 November. Make sure you have it in your diary!

Be a November Member and WIN!

Photobucket

Another month ticks over and we have another member promotion delivering free goodies! The first twenty people to take out a membership in November will receive a FREE copy of The Paper Garden: Mrs Delany begins her life's work at 72

It’s a rollicking good read and tells the Mary Granville Pendarves Delany (1700–1788) who picked up the scissors and ran with it at the at the ripe old age of 72 to create a whole new artform of mixed media collage.

Here's our exclusive interview with the author of The Paper Garden, Molly Peacock.

How did you come across the story of Mary Granville Pendarves Delany?
It's a long journey. I first saw her work in 1986 at the Morgan Library in New York City, and I swooned over it, but I couldn't afford the pricey imported book that came with it (I was a seventh grade teacher at a private Quaker school in New York), so I went off into my life. Then, in 2003, I saw them again. My husband and I had just been guest lecturers at Oxford, and we came into London briefly on our way back to North America, stopping at the British Museum. My husband had to make a phone call, so I wandered into the gift shop. It was a Looooooong phone call, so I made my way through the whole shop, and on the last table at the very end was the book I couldn't afford seventeen years earlier. Now I could afford it! I bought it and we left and got on a plane. As I read it and looked at the amazing images I reconnected. The book was by Mrs. Delany's great-great-great-great-great-great niece, Ruth Hayden. I didn't realize at the time that Delany's collages were right there in the Museum. It was only when I went back to London the following year that I saw them in person.

In what ways did she create a template for contemporary craft practices?
Mrs. Delany was ALWAYS busy with her hands. She believed with her whole heart that keeping occupied with the hands soothes the mind. She played the harpsichord, she designed embroidery patterns and sewed, she did shellwork (collecting shells and plastering them into patterns on ceilings, lintels, frames and mirrors), she did japanning (shellacking boxes to imitate Asian lacquerware), she designed her own clothes, and she famously, at 72, began her miraculous cut-paper floral collages on dramatic black backgrounds. Mrs. Delany believing in attempting, in plunging in, even when the goal was overwhelming. She also did all of these crafts WITH HER FRIENDS. This wasn't a solo activity for her. It was communal. This sets the template for us, for attempting crafts even without experience, and for doing it in company. For her it was fun. And it can be fun for us, too.

If you were going to take this book on a holiday where would you go?
I'd go from North America to Australia and New Zealand, of course! I'd take it anywhere there was a garden or a flower to look at.

For your chance to win a copy, make sure you take out a membership!

Good shows galore!

Grad show season is upon us and prime ourselves, here are three fantastic exhibitions that are whetting our appetites.

First up we'll be attending the Crafticise exhibition opening. Crafticise (full title Crafticise: make something that means something) is the title of an RMIT Industrial Design Elective that explores conceptual and experimental design through craft and handmaking techniques. Yay for craft and design, together forever!

Crafticise is led by Ben Landau and Brittany Veitch, both of whom are some of Craft Vic's favourite people. You may remember their collaborative exhibition Bio-Accessories at the City Library last year (shown as part of Craft Cubed), and Brittany was one of Craft Hatch's first guinea pigs! Ahem we mean Hatchlings.

Anyhow, back to Crafticise... to round off the semester there will be one-night+weekend only exhibition at RMIT and it is happening TONIGHT!

Here are the details:

Time: 5-7pm
Where: Level 5, RMIT Building 88, 440 Elizabeth Street

There are plenty of gems including Georgia Hutchinson's Mutual Growth (pictured below) which explores the relationship between object and owner, as well as Michelle Vanspall's Tradie Cushion (pictured above) that gives tradies the comfort they deserve.

So go on, have a crack!

Currently on is Lisa Engelhardt's FORME - Building upon her long-standing interest in botanical themes and printing, Lisa is another Craft Hatch pal and we're excited to see more work from this lovely lady!

FORME is currently on at C3 at Abbotsford Convent till 14 November.

And finally currently on is Got a nice ring to it, the RMIT 1st and 2nd year gold & silversmithing exhibition at First Site.

We went to the opening on Tuesday and there was some pretty great stuff there! This exhibition is on until 6 November (next week).

Craft Vic would like to yell a big 'hip hip HOORAY!' for Project Patchwork and the $3,000 raised! Holy moly that's quite a few zero's...
