SUPER MARKET, this Sat at Gertrude from 11am-4pm

Craft Victoria's Kim Brockett has put together a one-off event called SUPER MARKET that's happening this Saturday, and we want you to make your way there!

Gathering 20 artists, collectives and collaborations, SUPER MARKET features a few familiar names to Craft Victoria like Adam Cruickshank and Dell Stewart (who both had exhibitions at CV this year) and Kay Abude (who was in Fresh! 2007 with an installation titled, funnily enough, Supermarket).

It also features a whole bunch of other fantastic people like Damp, Greatest Hits, Hotham Street Ladies, Moop Jaw (Antuong Nguyen & Warran Wright - who will be showing work in a Craft Vic/Craft Cubed satellite exhibition in Aug!), The Telepathy Project plus many, many more names!

Don't worry if you're low on funds, SUPER MARKET is an exchange/barter based event so leave your wallets at home and bring your best haggling skills!

Current bargains include: sharehouse conflict resolution advice, three minutes of telepathic sex, 2min shadow cuttings, tattoos, a 5 year photograph-exchange contract, cookies for conversation, Ralph Lauren and heaps more.

For a full list of propositions and artist information, check out the blog: www.gertrudesupermarket.blogspot.com

See you there!!

Craft Online

A couple of nights ago we held the event 'Craft Online: websites and blogs made easy'. It's part of our monthly series of professional development talks where we focus on a different area each month. This month it was how to develop your practice using the INTERNET - which is not as scary as it sounds for some!

Presenting on the subject were our own Anika Cook (CV's web designer), Melanie & Jeremy from ArtSphere and of course the very, very lovely Pip Lincolne (Meet Me at Mike's) and Gemma Johnson (blogger and lady extraordinaire)

It was a sell-out session and if you missed out, don't worry as we'll be running a repeat session featuring the same speakers and topics on Monday 23 August. To book, call us on 9650 7775!

If you can't wait till then, click the image below to check out Pip's tips on blogging (dot point version!)

A big thank you to all of our speakers!

In the meantime, coming up in August is our annual Craft and Design as a Career seminar as part of Craft Cubed and Make It, Design It, Fund It which is all about exhibition planning. Stay tuned for further updates!

COUNTER feature!

COUNTER was reviewed in The Age's M Magazine pullout on Sunday - and what a glowing review it was! We especially like the part about the 'sweet, craft-loving staff' and of course, the nice shout out to CLOG. Hooray!!

At the moment, you'll find Aly Peel and Body Parts occupying enCOUNTER (but only until this Saturday before it all comes down!). Make your way downstairs and you'll find the usual suspects, including a select range of cute handmade Tasmanian oak knitting needles topped with colourful spotty round tops by Art Viva. It's one of our latest additions to the shop and is our small foray into the realm of craft supplies.

Thank you to Jayne for visiting us and we hope you'll visit us soon too!

Owen Rye/Clinton Nain opening night - Thu 17 June

A couple of weeks ago we welcomed in a new round of exhibitions - Golden Ashes by Owen Rye (and curated by CV boss Joe Pascoe), and Carved from Life curated by Clinton Nain and including work from Brian Cavanagh, Lucy Williams Connelly, Esther Kirby and Adrian 'Ringo' Morgan.

Here are some happy snaps from the night. If you'd like to see more, click here (and tag yourself as well if you're on the book).

Gallery 1 exhibitor, ceramacist Owen Rye

And afterwards, most of us trooped off to Tazio for a delicious dinner in celebration of Craft Vic's 40th anniversary. Yummy!

Aly Peel 'Knitting, Winter and Lists', now on at enCOUNTER!

A few words from Aly:

“44. Things That Cannot Be Compared: Summer and winter. Night and day. Rain and sunshine. A person's laughter and his anger. Black and white. Love and hatred…
136. Things That Fall From The Sky: Snow. Hail. I do not like sleet, but when it is mixed with pure white snow it is very pretty…”

From The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon

Things That Knitting Brings To Mind: Winter days. Unravelling and knots. Quiet thinking.
Things I Like To Do: Deconstruct and reconstruct. Use unwanted things to make something new. Knit while watching TV at night.
Things I Have Made: Cushions with snow flakes. Balls like a winter landscape. Clothes like a snow storm.
Things That I Ponder: Knitting something full of shape and volume. A knit can only be stretched so far. Machines may take over this old craft. Can I reclaim the knitting made by machines?

Knitting, Winter and Lists is on until 4 July and enCOUNTER is on display 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

CLOG special! David Neale at Metalab, Sydney

Over the weekend, I went to Sydney and somehow still managed to keep it local by catching Melbourne jeweller David Neale's current solo exhibition at Metalab. Entitled Some and None, Jewellery as Graphics, this exhibition marks David's first showing in Sydney. Hurrah! Next stop: world domination!

Some and None is on for another week until 1 July, so if you're heading to Sydney or already there, make sure you catch it! It's really good.

There's also an excellent two-part interview with David on the Metalab blog. Click here to check it out!

But words can only say so much, so here are some photos from the exhibition:

'Rye bread' brooch - personal favourite!

'the sun' gold ring - personal favourite #2!

Esteban, the resident gallery dog was also out for trot at Metalab - what a darling!

The Sound Playground

The Sound Playground is an exciting three-way collaboration between Craft Victoria, Bus Projects and fortyfivedownstairs that features interactive experimental instruments, sound sculptures and sonic installations.

Curated by Amelia Douglas (Bus) and Nella Themelios (CV), The Sound Playground kicks off in a couple of weeks' time from 6-17 July at fortyfivedownstairs.

It's Bus Projects' very first off-site project since the closure of Lt Lonsdale St, so hope you can join us in celebrating the start of a new ride!

Featuring new commissioned works by Rod Cooper, Albert Mishriki & Ros Bandt, Emma Lashmar and Rowan McNaught, the entire exhibition will also be 'played' live by the artists and special guests in a series of extraordinary performances in the gallery.

Works include Sonic portraits of Australian sound artists by Rod Cooper that play on the idea of 'musique concrete', Emma Lashmar's hand-blown glass installation designed to be bowed and plucked, an interactive 'Manifon' (manifold panbalatron) by Rowan McNaught and a series of elaborate music-boxes by Ros Bandt and Albert Mishriki (including their new multi-timbre 'harpy-gurdy').

Here are the nitty gritty details of the performance series for The Sound Playground:

Performance times:
Thursday July 8, 5:45-7:15pm
Wednesday July 14, 5:45-7:15pm
Friday July 16, 5:45-7:15pm

Time travelling with Craft Victoria

In celebration of Craft Victoria turning the big four-oh this year, our lovely volunteer Beth McKinnon has assembled a collection of images representing Craft Victoria's history from 1970 to 2010.

Click the image below to visit the gallery and view images from that time we decided to knit in the enCOUNTER window, to the time of Black Christmas, and even to that one time we weaved and crocheted a giant scaffolding in Carlton.

Enjoy!

Holding Hands totebag project!
